My Priorities
Cape Elizabeth’s schools are one of the community’s greatest assets. We have much to preserve. This is a time of transition for the community. We have a new middle school underway and there are both new curricula being implemented and ongoing reviews. Education at large is facing a challenges issue - the role screens and technology play in the education of our students. Cape has the opportunity to be a leader on this issue.
Academic Excellence
I believe having a strong academic foundation in the basics - reading, math, writing. This sets students up for future success regardless of which path they choose to pursue after high school. The curriculum used should be chosen based on the most current research in how children learn. The prime example of this is the implementation of a phonics-based curriculum two years ago, following many years of parent advocacy and district review. I am glad to see the district continuing its review process for all subjects. While it is not the role of the School Board to choose a specific curriculum or technology, I will be an advocate to ensure the district implements best practices.
Focus on Student Learning
With a background in public health, I believe strongly in using independent, non-industry-funded research to drive choices on curriculum, programming, technology and classroom choices. Any significant decisions should be required to prove a material improvement in student learning.
One of the biggest issues in education today is the negative impact screen-based learning has on students. Early adopters of screen-based learning, such as Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, have significantly reduced the use of screens in the classroom. Some of the largest districts in the US are doing the same. If entire countries have made these decisions, our district must take this issue seriously. I am glad that my efforts with a group of dedicated people have persuaded the district to conduct a district-wide technology audit, so that they can answer what technology is being used, how often, how much it costs, what personal data is shared, and what research shows material benefit to student learning and health.
Thoughtful Planning
With a new middle school underway, it is an ideal time to ensure Cape Elizabeth is planning for future improvements, in both academic and physical plant. The current School Board is doing an excellent job of ensuring this is occurring. I hope to be able to bring my applicable professional experience to the Board.
